Uzbekistan Seminar: Investment Arbitration and tackling anti-corruption (Case studies examined)



On the 20th of September, 2021 the Foundation held a virtual training seminar on anti-corruption and investment arbitration for an audience of delegates from the Supreme Court, Ministry of Justice and General Prosecutor's office of Uzbekistan. These interactive sessions looked at the various agencies and systems in place, paring UK speakers with Uzbekistan judges and taking case study examples to examine how each system would address them.


The seminar was open by His Excellency Mr Said Rustamov, Ambassador to the Court of St James, Ikramov Muzraf Mubarakhodjaevich Deputy minister of Justice of the Republic of Uzbekistan, Sir Peter Gross President of the Slynn Foundation, and Mr Nodir Sidikov Partner of Fieldfisher (who kindly sponsored this event)


Professor Ross Cranston QC presented on anti-corruption covering the various agencies and mechanisms in force in the UK. Next the audience heard from Latif Jalov Abdurashidovich Head of Department of Coordination of Anti-Corruption Measures of the General Prosecutor’s Office who discussed current methods of combating corruption under the Uzbekistan system and Mr. Daulanov Ulugbek Bazarbayevich the Deputy head of Anti-corruption system monitoring and analysis department of the Anti-Corruption Agency of Uzbekistan who considered a hypothetical case study. The floor was then opened to questions.


In part-two of the seminar, Mr Ali Malik QC presented an overview of investment arbitration. Following the presentation, Ms Taslima Annayeva, a Judge of the Supreme Court of the Republic of Uzbekistan, presented a case study for discussion.


A lively exchange then followed with all participants benefiting from the exchange. The seminar closed with remarks from Sir Peter Gross on future activities which will continue the good relationship and interaction between Uzbekistan and the UK legal communities.
